CAT in Final Selection: Perception to Reality

  • Nov 27th, 2017
What is the minimum CAT Percentile Required to make it to top B-School

The CAT exam of the year got over today. With almost 2.2 lakh aspirants having written the test today, all eyes are naturally on the next step and one question cropping in minds of all aspirants is, “What is going to be CAT cut-off percentile to secure a GD/WAT/PI call from premier institutes?” Right after the first session many of the aspirants have been calling Career2NextOrbit team and requesting them to help with this essential piece of information. Being known for the research based articles and brining authentic information to readers, our team had already filed an RTI to all the IIMs, IITs, FMS Delhi, and NITIE. What we found out was that though the relative weightage of CAT score has been going down over the years with the focus now increasingly shifting to overall profile of a candidate, CAT score still plays a significant role in determining the eligibility for next rounds of assessment.

For this, we filed out RTIs and asked institutes, “Minimum CAT percentile for various categories which got final selection in the institute for both Males and Females”, and the reply that we got from IIM fraternity for 2016-18 batch was:

IIM Lucknow returned the RTI request, and, for other IIMs (Rohtak, Sambalpur, Nagpur and Calcutta) we have the minimum CAT percentile that made it to WAT-PI stage. Of these 4 IIMs, IIM Nagpur answered the RTI, and for others we got data from their websites.

Our team also got reply to RTI filed to IIM Raipur, and even though the institute accepts 90 (General), 81 (NC-OBC), 75 (SC), 65 (ST) and 65 (DAP) as minimum CAT percentile to shortlist for WAT-PI, the reply to RTI was a bit confusing in which it said that the minimum CAT score in classroom is:

The case is equally curious for IITs. For 3 IITs that replied to the RTI, here is what the data says:

Finally, FMS said that it accepted 97.75%ile in General Category, and 88.6%ile in OBC.

Isn’t it surprising that a general category aspirant with 90%ile in CAT is as entitled to dream of going to IIM A as is a 100%iler. Mind you reader, this is not what we say, but what the data says. Similarly, based on perception, many aspirants give up their dream of studying at IIM Bangalore when they see a score of less than 97%ile. However, again, the data says, that an all-rounded student has less to worry about.

Our endeavor with this piece is to break some myths, shake some perceptions and bring some realities out.

Keep watching this space for authentic information. We reaffirm our commitment to quality and authentic information for B-School fraternity.
