1. About the Company:

Wipro Limited is an Indian IT (Information Technology), consulting and business process services company, headquartered in Bangalore. It was established in 1945 by Mohamed Premji, as a vegetable oil manufacturer then known as ‘Western India Vegetable Products Limited’. It entered into the IT domain in the year 1981. It is the 3rd largest Indian IT Company in terms of revenue, as on March 2017.

2. History:

  • 1945: Established as Western India Vegetable Products Limited in Amalner, Maharashtra.
  • 1946: IPO for capital.
  • 1966: After Mohamed Premji’s death, his son Azim Premji took over Wipro as its chairman.
  • 1977: The name of the company changed to Wipro Products Limited.
  • 1981: Ventured into the IT Industry by manufacturing and selling mini computers.
  • 1983: Established software products and exports subsidiary, Wipro Systems Ltd.
  • 1985: Marketed indigenous Personal Computers.
  • 1986: Established Wipro Consumer Care Limited to manufacture consumer care and lighting products.
  • 1989: Established a Health care equipment joint venture with GE.
  • 1990s: Rapidly globalized R&D and IT Services. Developed the first ODC (Offshore Development Center) and offered software services to global clients.
  • 2000: Listed on NYSE (NYSE:WIT)
  • 2001: Became the first company in the world to be assessed at PCMM Level 5.
  • 2002: Entered the BPO business. Became the first software technology and services company in India to be certified for ISO 14001.
  • 2006: Acquired cMango Inc., a US-based technology infrastructure consulting firm.
  • 2008: Entered the clean-energy business with Wipro EcoEnergy.
  • 2012: Demerged its consumer care, lighting, furniture, infrastructure Engineering (hydraulics and water) and medical diagnostic business into a separate company named Wipro Enterprises (P) Ltd.
  • 2015: Carved out Wipro Digital as a separate business unit.
  • 2016: Acquired HealthPlan Services, a Leading Technology and Business Process as a Service Provider in the US Health Insurance Market.

  • Western India Products Limited: It is the IT solutions and R&D services subsidiary of Wipro Limited.
  • Wipro Consumer Care & Lighting: WCCLG is the business unit that operates in the FMCG segment dealing in consumable commodities. It sells personal care products like baby oil, and lighting products like LED and emergency lights.
  • Wipro Infrastructure Engineering: It is the hydraulics business division of Wipro Limited that manufactures hydraulic cylinders, truck cylinders, and their components and solutions.
  • Wipro GE Medical Systems Limited: It is Wipro’s joint venture with GE Healthcare South Asia, involved in R&D of advanced solutions in the healthcare sector.
