MBA Rank of Ranks 2017: Corporate Connectedness Rankings

  • May 25th, 2017
Industry Interface Rankings

Every year, various print media, online media and ranking agencies rate or rank MBA programs of different B- Schools. Occasionally, each of these rankings differs so vastly from the others that it leaves the readers reeling in confusion. This ranking trend started in the US, way back in the 1980s with the Financial Times, Wall Street Journal and Businessweek coming out with exclusive lists to help management students and aspirants figure out the most suitable MBA programme and B- Schools for themselves. This trend was quickly adopted by the Indian publication houses to help students and aspirants identify the best management courses and B- schools in India. All of these publication houses stand by the accuracy of the data used and regard their rankings list as the most accurate and authentic. However, the problem arises when these ranking agencies rank some of the B- Schools so distinctly that the reader is thrown off- center as the standard deviation between two or more rankings of a B- School is sometimes enormous.

Career2NextOrbit team did a thorough research to find out the root cause of this issue. To understand the cause, we examined the various ranking databases as well as the four sources (Business World, Outlook, NHRDN and Business Today rankings) that we have been using for the secondary data collection to prepare our conclusive rankings list. The findings from our research were astounding as most of these ranking agencies had overlooked a very important factor which alone can make or break the deal for any B- School. All of these agencies had considered a different number of parameters to prepare their list of best B- Schools but what stood out most during our study was the fact that some of them had completely ignored to consider corporate or industry interface as a parameter while assembling their rankings list. Our study also revealed that only NHRDN and Business World had considered this important parameter in preparing the rankings list. Overlooking such an important factor greatly affects the rankings released by these agencies.

Just as one cannot imagine a good medical college without it providing the medical students the exposure to interact with the patients at a hospital with good healthcare facilities. Similarly, one cannot imagine a Business school providing effective education unless and until the institute has good industry linkage. When we talk about the rank of ranks, it is primarily going to be the average rank of the rankings released by NHRDN and Business World. The readers are free to exercise their discretion on how helpful and useful they find it to be. However, in the best opinion of the various experts, both from industry and academia that the Career2NextOrbit team interacted with, there was a unanimous view that industry interaction is one of the key components that should not be ignored at any cost by the agencies.

Most seasoned researchers are aware that every research has got some amount of inherent bias. Bias in a research report may come in any form or component such as prejudiced questions from an interviewer or answers of the respondent or an incorrect interpretation and consideration by the moderator. However, researchers are also aware that more the number of observation lesser is the inherent bias. That’s the primary reason why we have considered these two rankings (Business World and NHRDN) to come up with our study of ‘ranking of rankings’ on the basis of their corporate interface.

For this purpose, we made use of the Structured Data Collection techniques and included the names of all the colleges that featured in the top 50 MBA institutes of any of these two rankings (Business World and NHRDN) to arrive at one conclusive ranking of rankings list.

Here, Career2NextOrbit team brings to you the rank of ranks of business schools as far as their corporate interface is concerned. Hope you’ll enjoy reading this as much as you enjoyed reading the previous articles.

*You may find some of the newly established IIMs(2nd Gen and 3rd Gen IIMs) and few good private B-Schools (IMI-Bhubaneswar, NMIMS-Hyderabad etc.) missing in this list. This is primarily because of them not being in top 50 of Business World and NHRDN rankings. However few of them have been covered in NHRDN emerging B-Schools category and are making good strides.
